Latin Patriarchate School in Al Hashmi
The Latin Patriarchate School in Al-Hashmi was initially opened in 1950 in the Al-Mahatta district with 57 students and two teachers, Mary Zananiri and Martha Al-Mu'asher, under the supervision of Father Boutros Suleiman. As demand grew, the school expanded and, in 1959, was formally reestablished in North Hashmi, beginning as a kindergarten in the home of Mr. • Awad Al-Kurdi. In 1960, the Latin Patriarchate purchased a property that served as a church, school, and priest's residence. Over the following years, the school continued to grow, including the construction of a new building with four classrooms in 1963 and the purchase of two additional houses in 1965 to serve as educational facilities and a residence for nuns. A winter playground was built in 1968, and in 1970, the church of North Hashmi was completed with the support of local donations. In 1973, the western part of the school was demolished and rebuilt to include a basement and three new classrooms. The kindergarten was officially administratively separated from the main school in 1974–1975, with Ms. Tamam Sakkas appointed as its first director. By 1982–1983, the kindergarten moved to its own dedicated building, and a nursery was later added. In 1986, a new school building was constructed, featuring 21 classrooms, two teachers' rooms, a library, scout room, and youth club. By 1987, the school served 954 students with 22–27 teachers. Enrollment continued to grow under the leadership of several dedicated priests and staff members. In 1998, Father Ashraf Al-Nimri was appointed parish priest and school principal. The school had 754 students and 24 teachers, while the kindergarten served 248 students across 8 sections.
