History & Summary
Nestled in the breathtaking Ajloun Mountains, 900 meters above sea level, the Latin School of Ajloun is a school with deep historical and spiritual roots. Surrounded by ancient oak and pine forests, this region has long inspired visitors with its natural beauty and rich Christian heritage. The parish and school began under the oversight of the Latin parish in Al-Huson. In 1895, Father Adriano Smets visited Ajloun and documented its scenic landscape and Christian population's yearning for spiritual guidance. This prompted Father Teobaldo Navoni to request the establishment of a parish, which was officially realized in 1897 when Father Yohanna Sarina arrived from Nazareth as the first resident priest. The first Latin school in Ajloun was opened in 1888, with just 23 students. Over the decades, the school became a symbol of learning and community cohesion. Ajloun has also produced several influential scholars and writers, including the noted intellectual Rox Bin Zayid Al-Farizi, who contributed to shaping Jordanian national identity. Today, the school continues its educational mission with the same values and spirit that guided its founding. The Latin Patriarchate has recently acquired 20 dunums of land near Ajloun Castle with plans to build a modern secondary school to further serve the local community’s needs.
